One of the best ways to know your heart’s condition is through ECG imaging. It is very commonly recommended by cardiologists across India. Dr. Siva Kumar Reddy, Hyderabad, recommends this test to diagnose you correctly so that he can make the best treatment plan for your heart condition.

What Is An ECG?

Your body sends out electrical impulses that keep it functioning. Similarly, your heart does too. An ECG or Electrocardiogram is an imaging technique that measures the electrical activity of the heart and records it digitally. The digital record is then printed for the convenience of the doctor.

When Is An ECG Recommended?

ECG reveals a lot of information about your heart including:

  • Heart rhythm
  • Blood flow of and to the heart
  • Shape, size, etc. of the heart muscle

Hence, you may need to perform an EGC is you experience the following conditions:

  • Breathing problem
  • Chest pain
  • Suspected heart attack
  • Convulsions and fainting
  • Abnormally fast heart rate
  • Heart murmurs
  • Stress test for the heart

Apart from that ECG also helps to conduct a better MRA or CTA. If you are already taking heart medicines, an ECG will be useful to access how effective those medicines are and based on the rest, the doses or medicine types can be altered. ECG is used to monitor the functioning of medical devices in the heart as well.

Is An ECG Safe?

ECG is a completely safe diagnostic test. It is non-invasive and does not hurt at all.

How Is An ECG Done?

For the test of ECG, you will have to lie down. Electrodes or sensors will be placed on your bare skin. Sometimes, that may be attached to your hands and legs also. The technician will record the activity of the heart for a few minutes. After that, you are free to go. You can collect the reports later or they may be sent to your doctor directly.

How Should You Prepare For An ECG Test?

  • Avoid oily and greasy skin creams and lotions on the day of the test.
  • Avoid full-length, tight clothes because the electrodes need to be placed directly on your legs.
  • Your outfit should be easy to remove so that the leads can be placed directly on your chest. You may be given a hospital robe for convenience.
